The Fireflies Lamp draws inspiration from the enchanting tradition of capturing fireflies in a jar, evoking a sense of magic and playfulness. This lamp encapsulates the essence of that ritual, enabling users to engage in a natural and gestural interaction to control, illuminate, dim, and turn off the light.

Rituals that evoke Memories

Objects and Memories is a project that delves into the profound connections between objects, humans, and emotions, aiming to explore how they intertwine to evoke memories, nostalgia, and rituals. It recognizes the influential role these elements play in shaping new experiences and associations. Design theorist Donald Norman emphasizes the significance of the "history of interaction" and the value people assign to objects, as well as the memories they elicit, placing greater importance on emotion rather than purely aesthetic or utilitarian aspects. “Emotion rather than reason” (Donald Norman, 2005).

The primary goal of this experience is to challenge the conventional perception of objects as purely sculptural artifacts. Instead, the aim is to transform them into elements that actively engage the user on a deeper level. This shift in perspective moves away from a passive "observer" role, characterized by static contemplation, and towards an active user experience.

Behavioral process of catching fireflies

“Fireflies Lamp” gets support from the archetypes and iconographical images of a mason jar, an old oil lamp or even a net, to get inspired by other objects that can trigger memories and gestural rituals, and that can potentially communicate certain functionalities, such as ‘illuminate’, ‘catch’ or ‘storage’.

The final result is very similar to the mason jar, since this form invites the experience of catching and containing fireflies, has a base and neutral colors that do not burst with the light that the insects generate, additionally, the lid is simple use and generate direct communication with the product's operating system. In the same way, 3D developments and rough prototypes were created, which aimed to test scale, technical and functional exploration.
